About the Future of TST

Jun 12, 2011 00:28

Hello, The Sky Tides! The mods would like to thank each and every player we've had for making the game a success! That said, this post is about the future of the game. In the past, people talked about the possibility of a reboot, and recently some other players have mentioned their own continuation. Since it seems that everybody has their own ideas ( Read more... )

My opinion as a player: I think a continuation would work best as a private/semi-private RP or a musebox of sorts. While I recognize that people would like to keep their CR and such, so much has happened that it would be difficult to work new players into the setting. A reboot, on the other hand, would be far less intimidating in the long run, since it's a fresh start for everybody.

As a mod: The above is just my own personal opinion, and isn't representative of the mod team's official stance on anything. I would like to say, however, that a reboot and a continuation aren't mutually exclusive, and can possibly coexist as two separate games.

Basically what Nebs is saying. We've had the game running for, what, about five years? There is so much history that's pretty vital to the setting that we would essentially be making a new game anyway, but with the added problems of figuring out which CR has been kept and making a Reial's History for Newbies manual.

Not a literal manual. But.

Plus, as much as I love the setting, Reial is getting stale.

While I would prefer a reboot, I'd like to say that Reial getting stale isn't necessarily a problem. The world below offers an opportunity for a new setting which can bring new opportunities to the game.

That being said, history will still be a tricky thing to work out, which is one of the main reasons why I'm hesitant to vote for a continuation.

As with some above me, a continuation wouldn't fly off too well, considering everything and I think more than anything it would just be plain difficult to get it work right ( ... )

While I agree that a direct continuation might be a bit awkward, one that's more in the vein of a spin-off (something focused on the world below after its discovery) that still works as a continuation might be viable? At least, I think it would be a way of getting around the possible CR issues.

That's my thought on things, personally.

Personally, I feel reboot > continuation if the game is opened to the public.

I feel that if you're going to start what is essentially a 'new' game and open it up to people who haven't been in TST, it would be better to let all players start on the same footing. Remember that if TST continuation(s)/reboot(s) happens as public game(s), you're not just catering to old players; you'll also be catering to new players, too.

The chances I would want to bring a new character in are almost infinitesimally small, so the idea of a reboot doesn't work for me. I have no interest in re-doing three years of continuity with my characters. Additionally, and I'll be totally frank about this, the nostalgia factor is the only thing making me consider sticking around. A reboot =/= TST. It's some other game vaguely based on TST. And I play with enough of the people from this game in other games that that doesn't figure into the equation for me.

That said, I'll keep an eye on what happens. For me, though, I'm not all that interested in a game that's going to try and make itself big and attractive to a brand new player-base. I have three other games already. A lot of people have already moved themselves on the new games, in fact. Probably something to keep in mind when looking at how to structure a reboot OR continuation. (Basically, who is it being made for--the old players, or some new theoretical player-base?

While I don't want to leave old players high and dry, TST does need new players regardless of which path it takes. A steady influx of new blood is necessary to the survival of pretty much any RPG; even the most dedicated playerbase can get burned out, suffer muse loss, get hit by real life obligations, etc etc. I saw this happen to another game I was in before I got involved in LJRP, and it wasn't pretty. In that case, the setting and history got so convoluted that it was pretty much impossible for newbies to really settle in (there was also some drama that helped kill it, but that's a story for another day). This is another reason why I prefer a reboot - I may be biased, but I'm honestly afraid of the same thing happening all over again. Hell, you could probably argue that the same thing all ready happened before the game closed ( ... )

Well, that's fine. But what I mean is, are people more concerned with keeping this TST, or are they really just looking for a new Steampunk Game. Either is fine, but if it's the latter, it's not something I have an interest in.

It's possible to bring in new characters without wiping continuity. It requires flexibility from the older players, obviously, but not any more so than was required when old players would drop and someone else picked them up.

What happens happens. I have pretty much zero investment in it at this point. But people wanted opinions, and that's mine on the topic.
