Get the iPhone. There are a myriad of reasons for and against, but as a business device (and toy) it really is the standard right now.
I've owned HTC phones in the past (TyTN Pro, etc.) and they are good, solid devices. But those drill down menus to get anything done get on my last good nerve.
I would be surprised if you have any trouble porting your old number over to AT&T. One of their big rallying cries was portability of existing phone numbers.
I love my iPhone. There are some things I wish it could do, or could do better (I have a first gen though, so some things are corrected by 3G instead of Edge).
As far as number portability, as long as your contract is up with one place I don't think it should be a problem. I could be wrong and just hoping that when I move I don't have to change numbers!!
I love my iphone, I have never regretted getting it. I had a Palm Treo and use the iphone so much more. The convenience of having an ipod and phone in one was the biggest selling point for me.
