Moving has never seemed so overwhelming before. I don't know how I'm gonna get all my stuff packed in time. I don't know how I'm gonna get my furniture up to a third floor apartment. I've asked a few people to help, but so far the only person who has committed to helping is Chris (in exchange for beer and a shrubbery...which he had to explain was a ( Read more... )

Both times I moved last year I hired movers to move me. Was pricey, but to me was totally worth it bc I didn't have to lift a finger...and I have A LOT of stuff.

Good luck with the move!

What are typical rates for a moving company? I requested a quote from Starving Students last week, but they never got back to me.

I mean it will vary from state to state...first time I moved it was like $900ish...but I moved stuff out of my house, then storage shed, then had to drive an hour and 20 mins to the new apartment.

I'm gonna say it's probably around $600? It will vary also on how many men they need...and what floor you live on. I had to pay more because I was moving to the 3rd floor in the first apartment.

I actually only paid about $400 to move, but there was no upstairs moving involved. I had a TON of boxes too. Try Starving Students again...that's who I used.

I'm going to echo the "hire movers" sentiment. Generally, after you factor in the costs of pizza/beer for the ppl who helped you move, plus rental car fees, plus gas, plus extra insurance if you're renting a BIG truck, the costs are roughly comparable, but the difference in your physical and mental state is drastic.

I bet you can get the cost of movers down to about $350, if you have EVERYTHING packed and ready to go on the big day. I usually shuttle all the boxes and small furniture myself prior to the big day and let the insured pros handle the big pieces only, and have found this saves time on the big day, which saves money.

If you want, I can find the info for my last movers. They were very reasonably priced, no hidden packing materials or mileage fees, and they were nice guys.

With various expenses right now, I'm not sure I can/should hire a moving company. I'll take the info for you movers though. It never hurts to get a quote.

Sure. It was Schlep LA. If you Google them their info should come up.

I believe when Brad and I moved their rates were $80/hr for 2 men or $120/hr for 3 men. A 3 hour minimum is generally required and they charged a flat $30 to cover their gas/mileage expense, but of course you should get a quote from them in case that changed.

Since you're not moving a fridge or a heavy couch, you can probably get away with 2 men, unless your entertainment system is really really huge.

Thanks. I'll give them a call and get a quote. The entertainment center isn't especially big. I've moved it with one other person before...that just didn't involve stairs.

When Chris and Sara moved, we found these guys on Craigslist... something about Hercules. They were pretty good, and cheap. I can see if I/they can find their info again.

But yeah, movers are awesome. Also, they generally have insurance and will replace stuff that they break, unlike if a friend drops something (and is an asshole, or can't afford to replace it).

Riz also did CL for his office move. There is always fear they may run off with your stuff, but they were remarkably cheaper than when he used a moving co.

My move date is on Sunday May 1st. I would appreciate as much help as I can get. Right now, I have Chris (Boozehound) and Scott helping transport the furnature to the new apartment. I think the three of us will be ok getting it from my apartment into the two trucks. If you wanna meet us at the new apartment to help unload, that would be beyond awesome. There will be pizza and beer afterwards. I know you and Scott don't drink, so I'll make sure there are sodas as well.
