Aside from the "bad Ju-Ju" aspect of buying a foreclosed house, there is a LOT more paperwork and effort involved. I wouldn't recommend it for a first house just because it is typically a much more complicated transaction and takes a few times as long. That said, if you find a good deal and are diligent with your homework/follow-up, it can be a good idea for you.
I spent my 50th birthday last month drinking an "effervescent saline laxative with a pleasant lemony flavor" for my emergency colonoscopy the next day. The label lied about the pleasant part and my colon was in excellent health.
Good luck on the house hunt! Remember, decor can be changed. That awful wallpaper in the downstairs bathroom shouldn't put you off a great house.
