Most of my half-a-k of tadpoles have now been released back into the great wilds from whence they came. I kept about 30 or so, mostly the biggest ones I could get but also a couple of small ones as I thought it'd be interesting to see how they develop ( Read more... )

I merely chose the most appropriate of my icons to represent the fact that tadpoles eat a lot I do not understand what the problem is

So...I'm really weird. I love pond-dipping and am okay with (even interested in) insects, spiders, et al. when they are outside. Witness my pictures from Japan, which are mostly of the "ooh, nifty spider!" variety. But as soon as insects and spiders come inside, they are terrifying and I turn into one of those stereotypical females that scream and jump up on chairs and such. Or I smash them viciously. There is no in-between.

Basically I feel very conflicted about your pond-dipping pictures. On one hand, I think it's really cool and am sort of jealous because I don't live in a place where I can easily do that kind of thing. On the other hand, part of me is flailing like mad at the idea of bringing "bugs" into the house. YAY IRRATIONAL FEARS. I will focus on the hilarity of your having to cook for tadpoles, instead.

Although I have always been absolutely fascinated by bugs I don't generally like to touch them and wasps, big spiders and beetles etc. kinda creep me out a little so I do sort of understand where you're coming from!

It'll be easier when they become carnivorous because then I can just throw bits of chicken from my dinner in there. I'll also get a Daphnia population going so they can snack on those.
