Our cat just caught a bird. She didn't kill it; just brought it inside, put it under a cushion, and then got confused about where it went. I distracted her with food and wrapped the bird up and took it outside. It seems to be okay.

Cats are dumb. But then, so are birds.

Your cat is being a cat and brought you a gift :))) She loves you!

I just ask you to pleasepleaseplease do not let your cats outdoors at night. It can be very hard to see them in the streets. I cannot recall how many times I almost run over silly cats and caused an accident because of that. It's hard to spot a cat on the road at night.

We always put them in at night! We had to leave Pincho out one night because she wasn't responding when I called (by which I mean "tapped a can of food loudly") and I was super super tired and not willing to play hide-and-seek with her, but now we try to start that process earlier. Button didn't come home the other night when I tapped the food, so I went in, brushed my teeth etc, and then went out again ten minutes later. By that time she was sitting on the deck waiting for me to open the door :)

The nice thing about our neighbourhood is that we're on a fairly quiet one-way street, and we actually let the cats out the back door (which backs onto an alley which is only used by the dozen or so houses here). I think River runs all over, but Button and Pincho tend to stay in the back of the house away from streets.

In other news, River just brought another bird. And it's under the couch. And I can't get at it. Goddamn cat :P

I am fond of the theory that they think we're dumb and are trying to teach us how to hunt.

You see, first you take the bird in your mouth. then you deposit the bird on the floor next to an object it can easily crawl under, and watch it crawl under it. Then you tilt your head and paw at the object a little bit. If that doesn't do anything, move to the other side of the object and paw at it a bit. Maybe tilt your head a bit more. Then get distracted and do something else.

Hahahah yes, of course it was River. We got all the cats outdoor shots and have been allowing them outside for the past few weeks, and River LOVES it. I mean they all do, but the other two cats mostly stick to our backyard or the neighbours' backyard, whereas I'm pretty sure River explored the entire neighbourhood in the first hour. If any cat was meant to be an outdoor cat, it's her :P. I'm so glad we finally moved to a cat-friendly neighbourhood.

I love birds and shrug at cats, so I always saw this kind of behavior as proving that cats are extra evil. But I concede it's just nature. And nature don't give a fuck.
