It's freezing cold in my office today. Not that this is a change, it's almost always freezing cold in here. There is something about the vents and circulation and the fact this was originally supposed to be a storage room that causes it. I have a little space heater. It's whirring away at my feet right now insuring that my shins and ankles are ( Read more... )

Yes, traditions are fun and funny. And there's always room for more. We make homemade pizza on Christmas Eve - always, always, always, for at least the last 13 years. No matter whose house we are at or who from the family makes it to Christmas.

put me down for naughty

we have a tradition i think you might want to try. Get so mind numbingly drunk off the festive holiday packaged malt liquor, spend the next two hours in a screaming match about all the year's past repressed angers, so that the neighbors in 4C begin banging on the ceiling below, yelling "don't make us call the cops!!". Then wrestle around and throw breakable christmas decorations until the police arrive...and that's JUST what the kids do.

Greg, don't think I'm not tempted - especially since this year my mother, for the first time ever in memory - either mine or hers - asked for booze for Christmas. This is sort of like Barbara Bush asking for a sexy red nightie. Part of you thinks, "Hey! Good for her!" While the other part thinks, "What the hell?!?!" But I think I'll leave this tradition to your family - my family is afraid to talk about their feelings, even in such an open and natural way as this.

ever since M and i split up, almost 5 years ago, i've been struggling to establish new traditions, ones which incorporate some of the continuity that M and i had established with our kids, but which also take into consideration the fact that we no longer live together, have separate lives, etc., so i definitely relate to what you've described here.

so, i'm curious, how did your holiday turn out? anything you tried (or that just happened naturally) that you want to recreate next year?

oh, and happy new year!! :)
