December 14th
Jinki didn't mind waking up early in the morning. He really didn't. It was a pretty morning too. There was the glittery white sky which was sprinkling snow onto the earth the night before, the surroundings which were coated with said snow that looked like cotton, the chill in the air which felt slight due to his clothing and it was nice and quiet, save for the crunching of the snow beneath his feet. But, he did mind that he had to take the morning shift at his mom's café for an indefinite amount of time, especially since it was his winter break. That he did mind, it would be boring.
The sound of snow being crunched gradually came to a halt as Jinki stepped onto the wooden patio and walked towards the door. As he unlocked the door, he couldn't help but think that the café blended in perfectly with winter yet it stood out due to it's chocolate colours. It was cute looking but it wasn't sickening, almost as if it were from a fairytale, it was a clean and soft looking, and it seemed to glow when the sun shone on it. Jinki really liked it.
Jinki walked in, noting the café still, and always would, have that sweet smell that reminded him of cereal, and flipped the sign to read 'open'. He really didn't need to do that as the café really opened at around 9:00 but he did it anyway, in case he forgot. Plus that way his friends would know that he was there, if they wanted to visit.
He walked up a flight of stairs, tripping a few times on the way, to the room where some employees would usually take breaks and goof off, and he turned on the lights. The room was a nice colour, a kind of bluish-white, Jinki didn't really know how to describe it but it looked nice to him. It had many tables - like, what, ten - and it reminded him of classes in the movies where people would just slack off - that's what they do in this room though, so whatever. He put his scarf and coat down on a table close to the back of the room. Then he sat down at a table near a window. He was bored now, for sure.
Then, almost as if on cue, his phone vibrated in his pocket and a familiar tune rang through the stagnant air. He took out his phone, almost dropping it in the process and he quickly and clumsily moved his arms trying to catch the device before it eventually landed, safely in his lap. He laughed, picked up and opened his phone and the screen blinked in those bright little colours that looked like they were dancing. He had gotten a text message and judging by the tune, the sender must have been...
'Hey Onyu~ How's your day going so far? Nothing right? LOL Well duh it's like 7:00 in the morning! I'm coming soon to bug you, so don't worry okay? You won't be alone and bored for long~ ♡
Love, Joon. :D'
Jinki giggled, he couldn't help it. He really wanted to whack Joon upside the head even though he knew Joon was just playing around as usual. Jinki snapped his phone shut and placed it on the table. He felt bored again. He decided he had to find something to do to pass the time. Jinki stood up and as he did so, he glanced out the window which was frosty but he could still see through it. And there, he thought he saw a figure moving in a room on a lower floor in the building across from the one he was currently in. Jinki knew that people lived in the little apartments that were on either side of the café in large pale blue buildings but, well he had never seen anyone before so...he guessed he forgot about them all together.
Jinki wiped the glass with the sleeve of his white knit sweater so he could see through it and then he carefully pressed his face to the window. It felt icy against his skin and naturally it stung a bit, and for a moment he thought he would freeze to the window, but he forgot about his concerns as he tried to focus on the moving figure.
It was probably a male, either a male or a very strong female, considering at the moment the person was holding heavy looking weights in each hand and was apparently attempting to punch the ceiling of their room, and the attempts were as successful as they could be for someone who wasn't at least six and a half feet tall.
Jinki stared at the male working out for a while, maybe only half of a minute, before the person turned and looked out their very clean window and surely spotted Jinki peering at them from the higher window. The person, Jinki was sure he was a man now as he was wearing a tank top and was rather muscular, quickly dropped the weights and ran and hid behind the wall to Jinki's left. And, almost reflexively, Jinki gasped at being caught and spun away, pressing his back to the wall, nervously toeing the chair-leg with his shoe.
After a while, Jinki got over his little panic attack and leaned slightly to his right to peep out the window. He was met with a pair of curious deep brown eyes peering back at him. Jinki panicked a bit again and almost fell while the other man ran, or more like crawled, across the room, grabbed some stuff and then crawled back. Jinki didn't see what he grabbed though, he was too busy trying not to fall.
Then suddenly, Jinki saw something connect with the other guy's window. Jinki gingerly pressed his face to the glass again and stared intently at what it was. It was a sign. The yellow rectangular paper had something written on it. Jinki squinted and attempted to read it.
'Who are you?' was written in big characters across the piece of paper. Jinki blinked in surprise then ran around the room looking for paper and something to write with. Eventually, his eyes landed on the table next to the one on which he placed his clothes and he realized there was a drawer in that table.
Jinki didn't bother thinking up questions, he just opened the drawer, rummaged around in it for a bit and eventually pulled out a thick wad of mint green sheets of paper and a black marker. He then ran back to the window and read over the sign. It had changed while he was gone.
'Hello,' was written on it now. He saw the guy peeping out from behind the wall as well, he was smiling. Jinki smiled back and wrote a response on one sheet of paper in large, rounded characters, to make sure he could read it, of course.
'Hi,' was the simple response. Jinki held it up to the window below his eyes then lowered it to show his smile as he looked at the man read his message and grin back at him. The man then disappeared behind the wall again and emerged after a short while.
'Jonghyun,' was scribbled on now. Then he pulled out a sheet from behind the 'Jonghyun' one and it read,
'Your name?'
Jinki laughed at that, he had completely forgotten to tell Jonghyun his name. Quickly, and smiling, he wrote his name.
'Jinki,' although he held it up towards Jonghyun, Jinki realized he could read it. Then he saw Jonghyun making long, semicircular shapes at him while laughing. Luckily, Jinki realized Jonghyun was telling him to flip the paper to face Jonghyun and he did so, laughing all the while. Then, Jinki heard snickering coming from behind him and he felt arms wrap around his waist.
“Hello,” sang a familiar voice, “You're as klutzy as ever. Who are you getting along with so well? Eh, e~eh?”
“Changsun, leave him alone.” said an irritated voice.
“Key! I said call me Joon! Why can't you be nicer like Mir or Onyu? Huh? You'll make me cry!”
“My name is not Key it's Kibum! But, you know, Key sounds alright...What do you think Jinki? ...Jinki?”
Jinki wasn't paying them any attention though, he was too busy with his new friend and this irritated Kibum a bit.
“Jinki, what are you doing?” Kibum asked walking closer to him and looking over his shoulder. Kibum read the sign that was pressed to the lower window while Jinki scribbled something onto his own paper.
'Who are they?' the man holding it seemed to be frowning a little. Kibum thought it was because he was confused. Or...could it be because of where Changsun's arms were currently residing? Kibum didn't know and he decided not to ponder on it, he didn't know their relationship anyway. Kibum read what Jinki wrote and then asked him a question.
“Jinki, who is this man? And why does he need to know if we're your friends or not?” Kibum huffed and crossed his arms. Seriously, some stranger already commanding all the attention of his son, what is this? Jinki was pressing the sign to the window, smiling a bit.
“Isn't it normal to be curious?” Jinki said it as if it was the most natural thing in the world and Kibum wanted to hit him for it because honestly, it made sense.
“I think it's normal too, yeah.” Changsun's head was now resting on Jinki's shoulder and he was nodding, and he kept doing it regardless of how awkward the movement was. Kibum wanted to hit Changsun too.
“Ha! Well, whatever. And, aren't you even going to ask why I'm here?”
“Well you came over because you wanted to, right? I'm glad!” and it must have been the way Jinki said it, all child like with a happy expression, that made Kibum want to respond with an enthusiastic 'yes'.
“Well, yeah, that's the truth.” Kibum responded, totally deflated from his earlier anger. Jinki returned to looking out the window while Changsun commented to Kibum. “Completely and soundly defeated, huh?” he was grinning as he said this.
“You can forget about me calling you anything else but Changsun.” came Kibum's rather cold response. Changsun began whining.
Jinki read the sign Jonghyun had just pressed to the window and he looked like a puppy while doing it.
'I want to be your friend too!' Jinki laughed and started scribbling a response while Kibum commented on Jonghyun's message.
“That guy's being so freaking honest, isn't he? It's annoying me for some reason. All of this is too cheesy!”
“What's the matter, Key? You don't like the guy? He seems nice enough.” Changsun defended, not at all surprised by Kibum's behaviour. It was one of his trademarks after all.
“No, wait, no, all guys are like this, I bet he's out to get my cute son!”
“Key, where is all of this coming from?” Changsun asked, he was getting confused.
“It's like you don't pay attention to real life, Changsun.” it was a fairly dry reply.
“That's not real life Key, that's only in manga and movies.” Changsun sighed.
“Yeah, well those things are based off of real life you know!” Kibum was definitely confident about his argument, it was because he knew he was right.
Jinki pressed his reply to the window. 'You are already my friend!' At that Jonghyun sent a toothy smile to Jinki and he couldn't help but smile back.
“Kibum ah, it's alright, he just wants to be my friend.” Jinki said turning to him slightly with a smile. Kibum didn't say anything more about 'all the dirty men trying to get his son' because, dammit, Jinki looked like such a child it made Kibum feel disgusted about saying things like that. But he did mumble one thing before the subject changed, “That's how it always starts.”
“You know,” Changsun mumbled while pouting, “I have a feeling the mood was really cute or something before Key and I got here...”
“I bet it was, I bet it was like one of those lovey-dovey movies before we got here.” Kibum replied to him but he said it almost as if he was blaming Changsun for the mood change, which he was.
“Why do you say lovey-dovey?” Changsun said straightening up a bit.
“Because they're totally lovey-dovey, here ask Jinki something.”
“Onyu,” Changsun sang, “When did you wake up this morning?”
“Uh...w-what?” came the confused reply. Changsun felt defeated while Kibum smirked with his 'oh hell yeah' aura flowing off of him.
'Do you live there?' Jonghyun pressed the sign to the window while pointing to the building Jinki was currently in. Jinki started writing a simple little 'nope' while Changsun and Kibum began commenting again.
“Ah...Key I feel left out. It's as if we're just talking to ourselves...What kind of questions is this man asking!?”
“Yah! Jinki why does he need to know where you live? Why!? What's he thinking up in that head of his? What!?” Kibum yelled as he grabbed Changsun and violently shook him back and forth. Jinki was, no matter how awkwardly, being shook back and forth as well, causing his reply to become a little messy. Jonghyun had a confused look on his face and, in all truth, he looked more than a bit shocked. Maybe even mortified. Yet, Jinki shakily pressed his reply to the window and it slipped a few times and each time was difficult to reconnect the sign to the window.
'Oh, do you work there or something? Can I visit anytime soon?' With these messages, Jonghyun had two sheets of paper pressed to his window and he had a look on his face that just screamed 'suddenly, this is weird'.
Kibum stopped shaking Changsun, and subsequently Jinki, suddenly and started reading the notes in an annoyed tone. Then Kibum very openly started speaking to - more like commanding - Jinki.
“Lee Jinki I forbid you from seeing this man any longer! You both probably only met like a half an hour ago and you guys already have all this chemistry going on and it's weird and, wait... do you know anything about each other?”
'Yeah I work here, sort of. You can if you want to.' Jinki pressed his sign to the window and smiled. As soon as Jonghyun finished reading it his face lit up and he started nodding. Then he looked around his room a bit and then turned back to Jinki with a frown. He wrote something quickly and the held the signs to the window.
'I have to go now. Will you still be here later?' Jonghyun had a hopeful look on his face and Jinki quickly wrote a reply.
'Yeah, I will,' and Jinki smiled when Jonghyun's face lit up again. Jinki then watched as Jonghyun scrambled around the room throwing on a T-shirt and a jacket then running up to the window, waving goodbye and then he left. Then Jinki felt the arms around his waist tighten, he had forgotten that they were there really, and he heard Kibum clear his throat. When Jinki turned around - Changsun turning with him - Kibum had a terrifying look on his face and Changsun seemed to be trying to sink into Jinki to get away from what they thought was Kibum's wrath.
“Lee Jinki, I asked you a question.” The way Kibum said it, it was scary really but Jinki could still reply so he delivered the most intelligent response he could come up with.
“Um...what was it..?” Kibum sighed. He really hated to repeat himself.
“You, you, do you know anything about that man?” Kibum asked that but he was sure he already knew the answer, considering it was Jinki he was talking to. There was a pause, it was slight but it was there. Jinki shook his head, slowly then quickly, as if he was trying to unhinge the question's grip on his ears. Really, Kibum wasn't surprised, he was actually relieved. If they knew nothing of each other then Kibum wouldn't have to worry about Jinki giving away personal information to people and then getting kidnapped, but that was beside the point right now.
“Do you know his name?” Changsun squeaked out before clearing his throat, a little embarrassed. Jinki's face lit up and he nodded while repeating 'yeah yeah yeah I know' like a little child.
“Yeah, his name's Jonghyun.” Jinki smiled. Then there was a pause.
“That's it? Don't you know his surname?” Jinki hesitated for a bit, then he shook his head. Kibum and Changsun exchanged glances before returning their gazes to Jinki. Well this was just lovely, a mystery man that they know nothing about, not even his last name, is going to steal their precious Jinki from them. It really irked them.
“And..?” Kibum questioned, scrutinising Jinki. Jinki looked so confused Kibum thought it shouldn't be allowed, not in the kind of world they were living in, it was really irritating.
“Are you in love with this Jonghyun guy or what?” Changsun was poking Jinki as he asked him this question, snickering as he did. The squirming Jinki's head snapped in Changsun's direction and he looked shocked, no, he looked mortified.
“W-w-w-what!? B-but, I, I barely even know him!”
“Jinki, don't you know of love at first sight?” Changsun suddenly seemed to be having fun, obviously at Jinki's expense. In all truth, Kibum found it hilarious - as one could tell from his hysterical laughter - but he was still annoyed. They continued poking fun at Jinki until he had to work - and then they still didn't stop, Changsun just wasn't attached to Jinki any more.

It was about 4 pm by the time Jinki finished working his shifts. He really only had to work from nine to twelve but some of the employees had decided to skip out on work today. Kibum was thoroughly irritated when he found out that Jinki had to work longer because of 'retarded loafers who can't even do their jobs and had better not show their faces in my presence or I swear I'll rip them a new one'. Changsun thought Kibum was rapping some new song before deciding to tell him should be 'a rapper or something' and Kibum proceeded to whack him over the head. They then proceeded to whine and complain to Jinki, 'why do you have to work, play with us instead!' After about fifteen minutes of nagging and scaring costumers they decided to help Jinki out, until the employees for the four o'clock shift arrived, that's when they ran away, swiping three drinks and running up the stairs to the 'Slack Off Room' as they now called it, stumbling and laughing all the way.
“Well, what are you going to do about your situation Jinki?” Kibum questioned holding his frappuccino, idly drawing circles on the cup with his thumbs while studying Jinki for tell-tale signs of any kind of emotion. Changsun was just playing with his drink, blowing it and watching the colours in the drink make different swirling patterns. Jinki was sitting in the same seat he was in the morning, he suddenly felt he should sit there, and was drawing little patterns in the condensation on the window.
“What situation?”
“Your love situation of course!” Changsun laughed the comment out, he was suddenly interested. Jinki spluttered and almost dropped his latte.
“You know, I really don't like the thought of some guy we don't even know stealing you heart away Jinki.” Kibum said looking right at Jinki. Jinki felt embarrassed at that, it's like Kibum was an overprotective sibling who decided he wasn't going to listen to him. Jinki doesn't love the guy, he barely knows him! So of course he doesn't love him...right? Changsun was chuckling.
“You know, this means war! Right?” Kibum nodded. “Maybe we should give Jonghyun a hard time.” He said this very happily and seemed proud of himself suddenly. Kibum perked up when he heard those words, a smirk plastered onto his face.
“Oh Changsun, that's one of the best things I have ever heard you say!”
“What?” Jinki was a bit confused.
“How should we do it, I wonder?” Changsun started grinning. Kibum started doing some kind of victory dance...or maybe it was a happy dance? Jinki really couldn't tell. Changsun then hit the desk he was sitting at and he announced, “Let us go and plot! But, Jinki cannot know what we are plotting,” Kibum and Changsun looked at Jinki who suddenly felt very uncomfortable under their gaze.
“Jinki, you go downstairs and Changsun and I will stay here and...have a discussion.” Kibum said this while glancing between Changsun and Jinki. Changsun seemed to get some sort of message from Kibum and he walked towards Jinki, he then grinned at him and picked Jinki up - well he wrapped an arm around Jinki's shoulder and he picked up one of Jinki's legs so that was carrying, as far as Changsun was concerned. He 'carried' Jinki to the door, dropped him - on his feet because Changsun still cared about Jinki's physical well being - pushed him out the door, waved and then closed it, leaving a mortified and wobbly Jinki staring at the stairs he now had no choice but to walk down.
It was about seven o'clock now and the customers were finally dying down. Jinki had found a comfortable seat near one of the large windows and he had been fiddling with the ornaments in the middle of the table for the past hour and had recently taken to staring at the many lights and their reflections flashing by, the many people bustling around and the picturesque sky slowly changing colours for the world to admire. Jinki slightly pulled up his sleeve - which was obviously too long as it covered more than half of his hand - glanced at his watch and then quickly pulled the fabric back to it's original position. He sighed, there was still one long hour left before he could close the café, run home, snuggle under his covers and sleep. He sighed and started wondering about what Changsun and Kibum were possibly 'plotting' for so long. He had tried to go back in a few times but they had locked the door and were speaking in sneaky whispers and Jinki had pressed his ear as hard as he possibly could against the door, but he couldn't understand anything - he could barely hear it.
Jinki suddenly became aware of his surroundings as the last few customers picked up their belongings and left, the soft clicking of the recently closed door reverberating throughout the now silent room. Jinki stood and smiled as he viewed the last of the employees running out the door yelling that they had a shortened shift and that they would see him tomorrow. Jinki decided he would attempt to find out what his two friends were doing one last time before giving up as he walked towards the stairs. Jinki had just walked past the door when he heard the bell ring again. Maybe it was because he wasn't expecting anyone or maybe that time the ring just surprised him but whatever the reason was, Jinki spun around so quickly that he felt slightly dizzy when he stopped his partial revolution and attempted to steady himself. And at that point in time Jinki couldn't possibly feel any more surprised.
There was Jonghyun waving at him, one of the most charming smiles Jinki has ever seen plastered right onto his face, just for him.
“Hello, Jinki.”
