The pain clinic appt went well. The doc was very sympathetic and knew just what to do to start to combat this pain. He gave me a pain patch (the fentynol like I was on before) and a drug called topomax (sp?) that stops nerve pain, which is my worst pain. I'm worried about the patch, since it gave me terrible withdrawl when I went off of it ( Read more... )

#1 - How big is the dosage they gave you? If it's over 50mg, I HIGHLY recommend that you go on the meds slowly, 25mg at a time over a couple of weeks. I've known people whose docs who gave them 100mg dosages without telling them a word about side-effects and such, and were immediately plunged into severe mood swings and bipolar symptoms. Your spiritual ideas make perfect sense to me. What you describe is pretty close to the way I see things.

So glad you got to see the pain doctor and have some new options for coping! Keeping aware of your reactions to the meds is important but please also give your body time to adjust to the new meds, too. I have found that some meds that I hated in the beginning were my best helpers if I just gave them a chance to work. The fentanyl patch is a good example. I didn't like the knocked out feeling I had when first wearing them.(and the skin irritation) Though I kept at it, because the pain had been so unbearable before using them. But, before I knew it, my body adjusted and I was even safely driving while wearing them. After being on them a year, I was able to get off them.
