Today at the historical society I made a pretty awesome discovery. I started organizing the vertical filing cabinet. It's basically full of these insane files of clippings and pamphlets, filed in the most ludicrous fashion, with dumb subject headings, duplicate files, bad cross-referencing, etc. So I'm going to clean it up. There's also a lot of ( Read more... )

Interesting how some styles are classified as widow's and then others have titles or names (Odette, Olga, Cochin!). What a fantastic find and a great post title.

Yeah, I'm not certain if those dresses were meant to be other styles a woman could wear throughout the year, or if they were meant for women besides widows, like sisters/mothers/daughters, etc. So bizarre. If I remember correctly there's a whole section in Jane Eyre (I think?? unless it is a different novel) criticizing the pomp + circumstance associated with funerals and mourning in the 19th century, so that's what I kept thinking about when I was looking at this.

I love finding stuff in there *_* If I just got paid for this job I'd be very happy. XD

This is awesome! So many lovely styles. Fashionable mourning! Makes me think of Mrs. Thornton! :)

Hehe, "the newest neutral shades"! :D

TOP GOFF! ;P I think Mourning Warehouse needs to be a fic title or a band name or something, seriously.

But anyway, this is so cool! I've always been fascinated with mourning dress ever since I learned what it was circa age 8 and Gone with the Wind. And there's all this etiquette stuff for full mourning and half-mourning and what you can and can't do while you're wearing it.

I also love that they're "Parisian Novelties." Which I know means new things, really, but reads pretty hilarious in modern-land.

That is utterly fascinating from the point of view of the mourning styles - and amazing to me because I know where that address is. Well, was, obviously.
