Their words, mostly noises

Harper was as happy as a clam, which was unusual, to say the least. She certainly caught dear Uncle Claude's minor outburst as the curtain went down for intermission, spotting her mother, Greta, attempt to calm him down. To her surprise and relief, they had stayed until the very end, though leaving before she had come out to greet the audience ( Read more... )

Owen rushed to her as soon as he saw her, still a little confused by what he'd seen on stage. He knew Harper and that play... Hit way too close to home to be coincidental.

He took her hand and leaned in close to whisper, not wanting anyone to overhear him. "Harper, are you okay?"

"Of course," she whispered in return, keen eyes on him for a moment. She had been watching him out of the corner of her eye as well during the show, making note of his reactions.

"Why wouldn't I be?" she added.

"Are you going to explain to me what you were thinking?" he asked her, his voice still low, gripping her hand a little tighter. "You have to know that I saw that for what it was, Harper."

"Do we have to do this right now?" Harper hissed for a moment before putting on a smile, slipping her hand out of his grip.

"It's a happy evening."

Frank took a moment behind stage before heading out to the lobby. He took the wig off, scratching his head quickly before replacing the long brown locks, and adjusted his clothes. He jumped up and down, grinning like a madman, then finally followed the rest of the cast out into the already ridiculously full lobby.

Of course the play was the thing. Of course the play was the best part, but he'd never stop getting a kick out of how almost everyone seriously thought he was a girl! There could be no better proof of how good an actor he was than how often he heard variations of the phrase "I had never seen 'Frank' as a girl's name before!" Or "I remember when I had legs like yours, darling~" Depending on Frank's mood, he sometimes politely corrected his adoring fans, let them bask in their ignorance, or (most often at the end of a long run of shows) would loudly shout in the middle of the lobby I HAVE A DICK AND I'M PROUD OF IT ( ... )

Harper had been engaged in a conversation with one of her past English teachers, hearing praise after praise, honestly trying not to yawn from all of it. Yes, she could be a brilliant playwright, she knew.

She smiled a little when Frank arrived and waited a moment before greeting him with a polite nod of her head, her grin widening.

"Ah, the lady greets the public," Harper joked quietly.

Frank curtsied slightly, grinning stupidly at the girl. "Wouldn't do to keep my adoring fans waiting!"

He gently elbowed her side, moving to stand next to her and survey the crowd. "You did good."

"You love it," she observed with a chuckle, lightly rolling her playbill.

"Thanks," she added. "You too. I think you really enjoy this part of the night."

If Pete was the type to believe in physical contact with other human beings, everyone in the cast, crew or who happened to be standing in the line of fire would be getting enormous bear hugs.

But Pete is approximately seven and half pounds, so bear hugs are out of the question. But he's shaking hands left and right and has enduring so many sideways shoulder embraces (which TOTALLY don't count as HUGS) and hair-musses that he looks like he's just been through a tornado.

"PETE!"

Naturally, Snug was the first to attempt a hug, because she was just an affectionate person and had a special place in her heart for her dear director.

Well, okay, hugs from Snug are acceptable. BUT NOBODY ELSE. Cause Pete totally doesn't enjoy them. Really. He's just hugging Snug tightly because...he doesn't want to...disappoint her?

THAT'S FINE WITH US. So, Snug gave him a huge, huge hug before finally releasing him, all beamy.

"So, what d'you think of this evening?"

Raye was hovering around in her awkward fashion, but she finally worked up the nerve to tap Harper on the shoulder, smiling in congratulations. "It, it went really well! Uhm, congrats!"

Harper turned a smiled a bit, idly wondering why she managed to intimidate people she already knew and had worked with. "Thank you," she said graciously. "You did a good job."

Fletcher set down his cup of crappy, lukewarm coffee by a fake plant and wandered oh-so suavely over to Harper. He had been watching her for a few minutes, waiting for a lull in her constant admirers and -- bam, timed it perfectly.

"Intense play you wrote there, little girl," he said, smiling -- okay, it was a little like a leer, but it was nice! Kind of! I promise! -- while holding out a half dozen red roses.

"Thanks," Harper said politely. His face wasn't exactly one she wanted to see, but at least she had the satisfaction of knowing that he ... attended and had an opinion on it.

"That's all I'm going to get? A cold 'thanks'?" Fletcher asked, still holding out the flowers.

Harper held back a sigh and took the flowers, appearing gracious now. "It wasn't meant to sound cold. But, thank you," she amended.
