I haven't decided if I'm going to join the rest of the world in getting some sort of DVR. But if I was, what do you recommend? Going through my cable company? Purchasing a TIVO?
I have TIVO and LOOOOOOOOOVE it. I don't know how it compares to the cable company DVRs, but I think it might be a little bit cheaper. And the Tivo man is so much cuter than the evil blood sucking cable company execs ;P
We have our second one through DISH (we upgraded to HD when we got a new tv). We love them. I think if you sign up with DISH now, the DVR is free, but there are some monthly fees.
I just joined the world of DVR last month. I had still been using my VCR to record my shows every week. I had been trying to stay away from a DVR because I've heard a lot of stories about people watching more TV than they were before. Well, I got a DVR thru Time Warner last month. Easy to set up, and easy to figure out. I only watched about 3-4 shows a week, so I figured I didin't need anything super fancy. Well, sure as shit, I'm now watching way more TV than I used to, and I'm kind of disappointed about that. :(
It's varied, but overall I think we watch less TV. We know we won't miss the shows we want to see, so we don't plunk down and end up watching whatever comes on before/after the desired program. In fact, we'll go for days without watching TV, then have to do a little catch-up.
Of course, we're now spending all that non-TV time in front of our computers....
