I have a habit of making lists, of anything and everything. Useful things, like "to do" lists. Useless things, like "three letter acronyms beginning and ending with 'P'". Truly random things, as happens when people keep asking me for examples of the weirdness of SGA fandom. I started by just finding single examples, of course, but it inevitably devolved into list-making.
debris_k has made
a wonderful masterlist of SGA fic lists and masterlists, bless her, but I didn't see a list of that eccentric Atlantean genre known as penguin!fic, and that seemed a damn shame. I therefore spent hours compiling one:
Penguinfic: it's a genre...
- Pygoscelis, or A Gift of Pebbles, by Leah // The original penguinfic. John and Rodney turn into penguins.
- Mating Rituals, by Karen McFadyyon // The remix. No longer online, but can still be obtained.
- Mating Rituals, Too, by Karen McFadyyon // Sequel to the remix. See above.
- Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, by Amireal // Penguin cameo: Rodney hallucinates penguins.
- ...And Stranger Things, by kyrdwyn // John talks to telepathic penguins.
- Suspect the Penguin, by astheblackrosewilts // Rodney turns into a telepathic penguin.
- Penguins & Sparrows & Stars, by bluflamingo // Penguin cameo: John turns into a metaphorical penguin.
- Just Like Penguins, by Vega (2 parts) // Rodney and John are gay, like penguins.
- Bondsman, by Casspeach // Penguin cameo: John and Rodney are pair-bonded, like penguins.
- Antarctic Drift, by lavvyan // John/Rodney penguin AU.
- Bipeds and the Deep Blue Sea, by lavvyan // Penguin angst, sequel to Antarctic Drift.
- The Many Faces of Radek Zelenka: The Return, by James // In some universes, people turn into penguins.
- The Many Faces of Radek Zelenka: Casual Friday, by James // In some universes, Radek is a penguin.
- Foul Pleasure, by James // In some universes, Carson is a penguin.
- a ficlet by janne_d // “The device does what?”
- We Invented the Internet: porn, by Jane St Clair // Penguin cameo: Atlantean porn directory names.
- We Invented the Internet: Time Wasters, by Jane St Clair // Atlantean penguin memes.
- Perambulation of the Atlanteans, by chelle // John and Rodney watch March of the Penguins.
- Bell Curve series, by rageprufrock // John and Rodney's children develop penguin trauma.
- Harsh Continent, by 30toseoul // Penguin cameo: John sees the Antarctic penguins.
- The Mountains of Madness and the Bright Blue Sky // Penguin cameo: voyeur Lovecraftian penguins watch John and Rodney.
- Workplace Legends, by Katie M. // SG-3 and the giant penguins. (Stargate SG-1)
[ETA - Occasionally updated when I run across more. If there are any I'm missing, feel free to point them out to me so I can add them.]
...Penguinfics mean little to nothing to me, so why did I do it? I'm compulsive, unfortunately. If I start on a task involving data gathering and/or compilation, I finish it, even if it takes far more time than it's worth. I'd feel guilty about the number of things it gets in the way of at work, but I really don't have enough tasks there that obsessing over one gets much in the way of others. It does get in the way of sleep, however, which -- despite what they say -- is not overrated. At least today when I go to work I just have to be awake enough to sleepily smile or glare (as appropriate) at the student workers, and maybe awake enough even to read the email from IT that no doubt will explain why it's okay that someone not hired* to do computer support keeps ending up doing computer support for things that shouldn't need support.
*and more significantly, not paid. --Although bad design bothers me whether I'm paid to make up for its deficiencies or not.
