You may have seen this before, but seeing the debate raging over at the AV Club, I thought I'd take a little poll here:

Poll PS22 Chorus

The chorus actually has other videos on the site that apparently have gotten widespread attention, including a handful of Tori covers.

I agree that the material is probably inappropriate, and material has to be considered when you're an elementary school music teacher. Firing is likely a bit harsh, but someone probably should have a sit-down with the young music teacher, IMHO.

It really doesn't seem all that inappropriate to me. I'm reading the lyrics, and yeah, I can see what its about but I seriously doubt the kids would read that much into it. I know when I was a kid, I really didn't know what most of the lyrics to popular songs really meant (SheBop, anyone?) I just thought they were catchy and the words were "cool."

I even noticed that they seemed to have changed a lyric. From what I've read, instead of saying "and we're all getting hosed tonight" the kid sang "and we're all gonna party tonight." So...yeah, I really don't see anything wrong with this. Cute kids, cute song, cute music teacher getting his kids into music.

I went around high school singing Monty Python's "Sit on my face and tell me that you love me... Life can be fine when we're both 69..." And no one bothered to tell me it was about sex...

I can't understand one word of the lyrics. So I can't comment on them. The music is pretty, though. And the kids are having fun, which is really the best test of how good a teacher is.

they changed the lyrics -- i don't see what the problem is. i read that the teacher actually had the kids re-write the lyrics themselves, which to me makes it even better. the re-writing process seems to me like it would make a good teachable moment about why some things in this song aren't positive or appropriate. he's helping them engage popular culture in an active and positive way, and clearly the kids are loving it. what's wrong with that?

Kinda reminds me of something I saw the other day, in a pilot for a new show that's coming up:

They aired that pilot a few weeks ago. Stee initially told me I was not allowed to record it, because it was too campy for him, but then after I did, he watched the renditio of "Don't Stop Believing" about ten times.

I thought that "Rehab" was appalling. Painful to listen to. But then the funniest moment of the pilot occurred in the reaction shots at the end of it.
