That wouldn't bother me - a proper earth closet doesn't smell, but the short and often violent life is certainly not at all attractive.

My family were Scottish highlanders or Irish peasants, on my father's side, and Manx labourers on my mother's as far back as we can go. So I would probably have been a peasant girl, married at 15 or 16, and dead in childbirth by 18 as I almost managed to die in childbirth in 1988 so certainly wouldn't have survived it then.

Although, given the choice, I think I might have quite liked the life of a medieval nun.

It always make me laugh on the 'Who Do You Think You Are' programme where they sometimes desperately find someone who is third cousin twice removed just to find someone interesting in someone's past. Lack of records make tracing origins very difficult for us commoners doesn't it.

I agree with you absolutely! People who dream romantically about being a knight or royalty haven't really studied the era very well. I like my century, with all it's problems, thank you very much.
