August meme, Day 22

Good intentions. I posted yesterday, but totally failed to answer comments on the previous posts or catch up on my flist. And yet I spent the whole day at the computer with all the tabs open. But sometimes there are work type things that just *need* to be done and I (almost) managed to do them all ( Read more... )

I agree with you. It is interesting sometimes to look back and think how things might have been different if a different decision had been made.

It is interesting to speculate, but then I think of the longer term implications for where I would have been now if, so I back away from the fantasy very fast *g*

This question to me implies a sort of 'destiny' or 'fate' or 'outside controlling force' that is in charge of us, which i really do not believe or imagine *at all*.
I think things just...happen. And yes, of course, our actions and whatnot control what's happening to an extent; people with fear of flying probably won't be killed in a horrible plane crash, that sort of thing.

But for the most part, life is random, we do what we do, we hopefully do as much good in life as we can, and then we move on. Or rot. Whichever. :D

I do so agree with you about the idea of the outside controlling force, but I read a reply to this question on another LJ which made me rethink the whole thing.

From a different angle, yes, most things happen for a reason because eg I fall over because my foot catches on something, I feel hungry because it is hours since I ate breakfast, I smile because I see something nice, I laugh because someone tells me a joke, etc, etc, etc *laughs*

Eh, I suppose. But when people say 'things happen for a reason', the generally accepted notion/intent behind that is 'things happen to teach you something/bring you to someone/show you something you're missing', etc.

Like - if you ask most people, they would ascribe that particular saying with a 'there is a controlling force guiding our actions' kind of undertones/energy.

Yeah, and after a bad thing has happened (supposedly as comfort) that can be such a cruel thing to be told (she says from experience).

*g* I know, but I did enjoy the fun of turning the question around *g*

I tend to think more that everything is influenced by what happens and it’s up to you to make the best of it

I've been really interested in some of your responses this month, like this one, which go below the surface of a question or flip it around, as here. You have a very balanced way of taking these things. I don't think you're in need of a career change, but I suspect you'd have made a very good life coach or therapist (and I suspect you don't think you would have!).

Wow. Thank you. That is a lovely thing to hear.
I do try to be balanced in my life and my attitude to it. But you are right, I really don't see myself in the therapist role *g*
