August meme, Day 24

Aug 24, 2020 10:05

I popped out early today to the local Amazon locker to pick up a birthday present I have bought for my brother. It seems I am also collecting sightings of brave and unusual looking men this week. Today I saw another old guy. I would guess he was at least in his 50s, but he could just as possibly have been in his 60s or 70s by the wrinkles in his ( Read more... )

Aaaah, the lottery.
I have the same odds of winning as the last person who won.
But, yes, it would help if i ever bought a ticket.

I would set up a Fandom Trust that would help all those people who post to copperbadge's 'Radio Free Monday' posts.
And also trusts for my daughter, of course, and for my family and for my dear friends.
Donations to our local (and only) cat rescue, our local woman's shelter, to Planned Parenthood.

And then i would BUY ALL THE BOOKS!!! And retire to a house near the sea to read them. :D

Yep, millions and millions to one *g* And then increased hugely more because we don't buy a ticket.

Love your idea for your millionaire's retirement.

If I won the lottery, I'd split the money with a couple of disabled friends who are as finabcially insecure as me, and then send a percentage of my share to the Houston Food Bank, and a percentage to the Houston Public Library.

Those are good plans.

I like your plan. I think if it were me, I'd go for effort, rather than grades. My primary school used to mark both, and it was salutary. I've taught some people who struggle to get high grades but are so obviously *learning* that it's great to support them; equally some privileged A-grade dickheads coasting through...

When your grand fortune materialises, I would be happy to consult on your charity design. *g*

Thinking of a way to recognise effort has been one of my dilemmas when considering this plan. If I ever buy a ticket and do go on to win, I'll take you up on that offer.

It's quite wonderful that you have given this so much thought. Years ago I was the head of our church's missions outreach and I got all the flyers from various charities. I quickly realized that there were more, genuine worthy causes than there was money to go to them. Clean water, food insecurity, housing, education, health care, conservation, disaster relief, the list is practically endless. I came to the conclusion that each individual, and each organization, has to figure out what they are going to do and put their energies into that and do it well. What my church figured out is that we feed people. We've done some other stuff, like wells in Africa, but primarily we deal with food insecurity. So, that's probably where my money would go. Although I'd probably break off a significant portion to combat poaching.

Yes, the only bit of my plan that keeps failing is the buying a ticket part *g* I don't think I have ever done so.
Your plan is very sound, too.
