The leaves are beginning to fall. Yesterday I really noticed bare branches on the big trees near the Metro station. Just as in Spring they suddenly appear and what was bare, dark branches against the sky is unexpectedly green, now the full canopy is abruptly bare ( Read more... )

Imagine... pubs.

I know they are out there, but I don't ever seem to have a chance to go into one. Sigh.

I have a vague memory, but sometimes it feels more like a dream *g*

Being grateful for things is important I think. Taking things for granted leads to disappointment .....

That obsessive question is a difficult one - I don’t think it’s healthy to be obsessed by anything. Interested, yes, obsessed, no.

Pick an obsession, any obsession. No. Not healthy.

Gratitude is a good thing and I'm grateful it makes you who you are - otherwise you'd be a completely different person that I might not want to talk to, or might not want to talk to me! :)

I'm sure I'd still want to talk to you.

I don't think I knew how much I wanted to hear "Fancy an evening out at the pub?"! Our lovely little Scot's pub on the coast of Maine closed for good because of the pandemic. It's the first place other than my family's restaurant when I was growing up that has felt like home away from home. I miss it so much!

Obsession leads to all kinds of bad places. I am close enough to obsessed with food/cooking/feeding my family that sometimes I worry, but it *is* something that must be done daily. I spend a lot of time thinking, preparing, planning, shopping, and cooking our meals right now. Absolutely NO on all the others. Even though it's difficult to not be at least somewhat obsessed with money when you never have enough and worry about which bills you can pay and which ones can wait.

Thanks for sharing!

Oh, such a shame that places like that have closed for good. In a UK town or village, the pub is often the heart of social life.

Absolutely no on all the others *g* Obsessions like that can make a person venal, boring or judgemental (or all three *g*)

It was, indeed, the heart of our social life (which was sad, and is now sadder). Andrew made the right call. There's no way to make a living with a tiny pub in a place where it's too cold to eat outside more than six months of the year. Being a good Scot he always has many things going on, so he's focused on making gin--Blue Barren Distillery. He's building a new building and I think he's put up some whiskey.

That's good news, that he's got something else. Maybe he might also be able to reopen the pub one day. Meanwhile... gin! *g*

I haven't said it before but I find your litter picker snippets inspirational and indicative of what a kind, caring person you are.

It depends what you mean by obsession. If I was obsessed by my religion in a way where I tended to the poor, visited those in prison and did all the other things my religion tells me to do, most of which I do not, then that would be a good thing. If it turned me into some judgemental blowhard That would be awful.

My dear, no, I am not a kind and caring person. Honestly. Well, no more than anybody else *g* But wandering up and down my (short) street with the litter picker gives me a real sense of satisfaction. Last bin day the wind was really high and after the bin collectors (garbage truck) went past, there was loads of rubbish left along the gutters. In the end it was only enough to fill a carrier bag and the street looked really good afterwards.
