October Meme, Days 24 and 25

Oct 25, 2020 08:46

The clocks changed last night, so we are back on GMT and theoretically had an extra hour's sleep. The problem with that plan was that I knew about it in advance, so I went to bed an hour later than usual.

On to the meme -

24. What is the most serious law you've broken doing something you thought was morally right, wouldn't hurt anyone, or was no ( Read more... )

The stipulations in 24 are quite complicated. I could have the drug thing, but not sure if "morally right" fits, in that I don't thinks it's either right or wrong. Well, I paid for drugs for a friend on one occasion - I felt it was right at the time, though I didn't generally feel happy about him doing as many drugs as he did. I think to fit all the criteria, the only thing for me is feeding the gulls on my roof. It keeps them from going over to the road side so much and annoying passers by. There's a fine of under £100.

The law is an ass.

Yes, I read it that way at first, too. It seemed too specific for me to come up with an answer, but then I realised it was 'or', not 'and', so I decided it qualified as 'was no one's business but [mine]' (at the time). I don't feel that way now, knowing how the very illegality of drugs puts their production and supply into a broader criminal ecosystem that causes such pain and harm to others. But very little, if anything, is ever plain black and white and I completely sympathise with the choice you made for your friend.

"the very illegality of drugs puts their production and supply into a broader criminal ecosystem ..." Which is one reason I think they should be legalised.

One of my daughters did jury service on a very nasty case (she's now excused for at least ten years.) She was more or less traumatised by it, even though she was confident they made the correct decision in a finding of guilty.

In my case the defendant changed his plea after the first day, so thankfully I didn't have to actually make a judgement and we were discharged after that. But not hearing all the evidence, particularly not the defence case, I am left with the sour taste of an inarticulate and poorly educated man being bullied into a guilty plea because the events of the previous day were so difficult for him.

Mr Cee has done jury duty and would agree in part with what you've said.

I managed to stay up for about an extra half hour, and got up at more or less my normal time by the clock. But this first, dark, evening is always a bit of a shock to my inner clock.
