I think of the NE being snowy - only because every year that I lived there we had snow at least once.. until the winter when I began my maternity leave on Jan 3rd, with my mother saying how happy she was that I wouldn't be driving in the snow whilst heavily pregnant, and we didn't have a single flake!

Yes, I suppose we do get snow pretty well every year, but not proper snow - snow that settles and stays. I think the last time was 10 years ago.

It's a real sign of climate change, isn't it? When I was a staff nurse at the RVI in the 1980s the nurses who lived in Ponteland and Whitley Bay were unable to get in for 3 days or so on one occasion, and slept in recliner chairs in the day-room for 2 nights on another when they couldn't get home. I lived in Fenham and remember it taking me over an hour to wade home after night duty, through snow up to my knees.

Yes, I think that has only happened once in the 25 years I worked in the city.

Definitely not a fan of ice - particularly black ice you can’t see.
