May meme, days 19 to 24

A few days ago I was walking along the top at Tynemouth when I spotted a red sail out to sea. I have a soft spot for a red sail, so I wandered along and watched it head south, and when it turned in through the piers I realised it was a gaff rigged sailing cobble. The crew took the sail down once it got into the river and it continued under engine, ( Read more... )

That is so gorgeous! I love it so much, and I love your description of it. I love watching boats on the water, big or small, and really love the tall ships.

I get motion sickness in a rocking chair, so boats aren't great for me,but i love them.

They are a pretty design, aren't they. I suppose it's about 30 foot long. A very traditional local fishing boat for inshore fishing. Nowadays any of the few working boats that size left don't have the mast and bowsprit and are mostly used for crabbing with pots, rather than fishing with nets.

ALSO - I love that i know what you're talking about when you say 'bowsprit' and such - I have read 'Captains Courageous' more times than I can count, and when I was a kid, that meant looking up all the ship terms and looking at tons of pictures of fishing schooners. :D

There is a cobble up on the hard down at the Fish Quay, so I just went down and paced it out and it is exactly 10 good paces long, so I was right about them being about 30 foot.

What a lovely vessel.

Bumper stickers are just not a thing over here are they. I do see quite a few of those stickers on windscreens with ‘baby on board’ or whatever but not in the bumper ....

They are pretty. I think because they are such obvious workboats and exactly suited to their task.
I just posted another picture of another one in comments and I think you can see how they are a direct descendent of the Viking longship, for all that they have a flat stern.

I walked past a house yesterday that had the window next to the front door half filled with those windscreen stickers - Help For Heroes, National Trust, NHS Rainbow, some wildlife park somewhere, a whole load more I can't remember. No baby on board, though; maybe that was just a bit too big.

She looks quick - and rather beautiful.

I like a nice bit of Wensleydale with strawberry jam occasionally :)

She was not doing a bad pace under sail.

Ah, someone else who does it. Although I prefer raspberry.

Oh that's lovely and so evocative. I'm picturing her with a red sail.

For sandwiches, yes to mature cheddar, or some decent ham, or a bit of home roasted chicken is always good between decent bread. The golden rule for me is there must never be any mayo - I hate mayo with a fiery passion :)

She did look good.

There we differ; I do like mayo *g*

What an incredibly lovely scene you have captured! I really like your framing of the picture.

I grew up in Texas. Every teenager was poised to get their license on their 17th birthday. Place has such an influence on culture. To get much of anywhere here you have to have a car, somewhere with good public transportation I imagine it wouldn't be a matter of urgency.

I got a cavity in one of my wisdom teeth. My dentist asked me if I wanted it taken out or a filling. I asked if there was any reason to extract it. He said no, so I asked for a filling. I always thought it was strange that he would just assume I'd like my wisdom teeth yanked.

Thank you.

Public transport and much, much shorter distances, I imagine *g*
My Dad was in his 40s and my Mom in her 50s before they learnt to drive and there are a number of people in my street who don't own cars, but most of the people I went to school with learnt as soon as they turned 18. I think I was the last among my friends.

That does seem odd.
