That POV meme

Apr 08, 2009 11:07

A few of my flist have done a POV meme where you count the number of times you’ve used each character's POV in your fics. I can’t seem to find an example to steal right now, so I’ll just wing it.

POV break-down. Er, the ones I write, I mean. Not my own. Much. )

stargate, meta, meme

Yeah, what's interesting is trying to capture the character voice in the POV, but also how you decide to handle it stylistically (like you're saying you purposefully avoided Daniel voice).

Very cool!

First off, icon love! Is it new?

Yeah. My first few fics, I wrote in whatever POV I thought of at the time. My first multichapter tended to use specific POVs for dramatic effect (Sam and OC melodrama [emphasis on the melodrama]) or humour value (yay concussed!Daniel) or because I tried it from another POV and it totally sucked. My second one I decided to avoid Daniel's POV until the end 'cause I did really mean things to him and I didn't want the reader to know just how much he was being affected until he was trying to recover. I'm kinda depressed that my only two Teal'c POVs are in this story, and only for scenes where it was basically him or Daniel. Sigh. Must work on Teal'c's voice in future.

I started getting a bit fancier after that, limiting myself to a single POV for an entire story and playng in present tense. Is it weird that I consider one POV fancier than a bunch?

Hmm, relatively I guess. I made it in one of my more recent goofing around with GIMP stages. Hee.

No. I find experimenting all kinds of ways with POV is intriguing. And limited POV can be both restrictive and freeing as an author, so it is "fancier" in that respect, imho.
