Hrm... I might would have a little chat with the classroom teacher after that... Teaching them lies and leaving them shell-shocked after a supremely potent teachable moment = bad practice, IMO.

It was an awkward situation to be in as a visitor to the school. I am not a parent of any of the children or an employee. I eventually decided that she is probably a fundamentalist Christian who would not likely be open to other points of view and would likely resent overt intrusion. She could make it difficult for me to continue working with my mentee. I think I can do more for the kids by just being there, listening to their ideas, and offering an alternative point of view now and again to consider.

But I agree that this was an example of how emotionally retarded some teachers can be.

Stay in teaching long enough and you'll find plenty more exampled. ;)

Yep. I taught general ed for ten years and then special ed for six. Alas, I have been a witness to a great deal of stupidity over the years ....
