Yes, a helpless, aching that unsettles the world view upon which our lives are snugly located within. I know what you mean. I feel the same way when my kids go on trips overseas without me. For me, it goes beyond the role of simply being a parent. My children are in my charge and I strive to instill within them all the morals, right living, positive attitudes, comfort and wisdom that I have to share and which comes down the generations before me and into their heads and hearts. So when they are away, its a test or an exercise for them. And for me as well. They stretch their budding independence and freedom. While I cringe and marvel at how helpless I actually feel. I want to answer everything for them. I want to protect them in all ways and come to their aid. But, of course, it is trips like the wee demon is taking that is important, character and freedom building. My mind returns to the Gibran poem which says

I can't imagine my Phoenix leaving for any length of time. He's kinda glued to us still. Jade is way more independent and wants to travel a lot. So I expect it.
