Michael Jackson. Damn. Michael Jackson.

It was easy to forget as he descended into self-parody over the last fifteen years or so, but for a good, solid 15 years, he was the coolest man on the planet. The Globe story compared the two types of MJ fans: the ones who stood every day outside the courthouse at his trial, insisting he was perfect in everything, and the ones who have this sort of time capsule of him that ends right about when Dangerous came out. I liked that distinction a lot.

NICE. That's precisely it. It's just weird to me to realize that we were able to follow this guy as he changed the nature of performance - now we'll have to describe what it was like when other people just watch footage of it and take that performance style for granted.

Agreed. I remember being as wowed by his latter-era videos "Scream" and "Black or White" as much as by "Thriller." Such great stuff.
