Prickle-prickle, Bureaucracy 65, 3170.

Took the GRE over the weekend. As long as the essay sections come back ok, I an finished with it and am well satisfied. As a result of some strange glitch in the configuration of the universe, I scored 100 points higher on the math section than I had in any of my practice tests. Combined with the fact that my ( Read more... )

I double-posted last night, then to complicate things, I accidentally deleted the post with the reply on it. Fortunately, LJ also deposited said reply in my email, so I'm copying it below (partly so that my reply to it makes sense). Sorry, the bullet points did not come through in the email and I am not inclined to take the time right now to figure out how to put them back. Other formatting is approximate.

Oh cool, it's been a while since I've had enough things to say that I
can
use a bulleted list. Here goes.

§I was wrong about the rule, as you and/or A may have double-checked by
now. Oops. The next game should be easier all around, barring anyone's
frustrations about having to relearn beating the system. I wouldn't call
it squabbling if it's justified (although that of course is a fun word).

§YES YES YES! I'm all for the blank-card game. Even with the ( ... )

I prefer satori. It's just a cooler word, without the associations with any crappy 90s band. [shrug] But it looks like you'll enjoy your little slice of it, which is the whole point.

I've been racking what brain I have to try to come up with some cool concert requests, but haven't really come up with anything. Maybe some kind of correlated drawing would be good, like a mirror framing "Mirror on the Wall" or something, but.. it's really not my department. Regardless: to answer the question, yes. Sounds like fun. Got any good ideas?

Now that I think of it, the main song I'd pick (I've requested it twice but he never played it) is called "The Show Goes On." But there's really almost no imagery related to it. Hmmmmmmm.

Addendum: K is also curious about what it would cost her to have you do a logo for Her Baskey (the one she's making up the business proposal for).

I also did much better on the math than I thought I would. I wonder if the diagnostics just exist to make you worried.

That's a good theory. Alternately, the math that we're good at could be the kind considered harder by the test. Third possibility: the practice tests test everything because anything could be on the test (within defined limits), but the test itself includes a probability that makes it more likely to test for more likely to be used by more people regardless of discipline. [shrug]

Never-the-less, are you planning to take it again?

I think I have to.

I saw on my score report that I did pretty crappily for the field I want to be in. Your average engineering student gets a 721 on that part of the test. If I expect to get an assistantship I'm going to need to be "above-average."

I bet you can do it. It'll take some studying. The GRE site includes a math review, and I'm sure you can get a bunch of practice tests. Figure out how/where you make most of your mistakes and concentrate on that if time is short. Remember you also have room to be really persuasive in the essay, even if you can't wow them with an 800 math score (most other people can't either, which is good news).
