Yesterday after my psychiatrist appointment I went to one of the little local free zoos with nonreleasable native wildlife and watched all the birds eat breakfast.

Well, I say all the birds. All the birds had breakfast available, but the owls were mostly blinking slowly and wondering why the hour of half past ten in the morning existed and, if it ( Read more... )

Owls who live with humans are so put upon they tell you. So put upon. Sure, they get top notch medical care from personal practitioners who manage all their procedures. Sure, they get daily enrichment and nice warmy perch boxes. Sure, they get at least two square meals a day, presented in as entertaining and varied a manner as their humans can manage, but - - - -

Humans are so diurnal. Why.

The really hilarious part is that the turkey vulture pulled the tail off one mouse and ate it and then considered and, instead of starting in on the rest of the mouse, pulled the tail off the other mouse and ate it too! (and I cracked up giggling into my hands.)

I know, right? The poor owls, all these humans offering food and attention at the ungodly hour of ten thirty am!

Turkey vultures are so much fun - everyone knows the tails are the tastiest! Our educational red-tail hawk likes to pull the guts out and string them around, which is always interesting to explain to the kids. I could do entire hour long programs on just the dead mice and their anatomy, lol, the kids are always utterly fascinated! If it weren't for the poor horrified parents...

"Who's an adorable terrifyingly efficient apex predator?" say the humans. "After breakfast we can work on your husbandry behaviors. You're doing so well!"

"Why is sunlight?" say the owls.

I like turkey vultures so much: they're so beautiful and chill and have such a cool ecological niche! Pfffff, silly red tail, the intestines are super nutritious, you goof. Hahahaaaaaaaaa. Poor parents - it's good for children to know the facts of life! especially mammal life. Like where our tasty insides are located.
