The last thing he wanted to do was be questioned by Akatsuki. And if he told him the whole truth about what had happened, he was convinced that Akatsuki would definitely think him weak and pathetic. Unfortunately, Akatsuki obviously already thought he was weak for not having called out because he'd been trying to avoid a fight.
And he was probably right.
