"And a moment is all you can really expect from perfection."

I've decided, very logically, that I do not believe in fate.  Because I don't think that any kind of higher power would fate us into the bad things in life, it makes more sense to believe that sometimes things just happen.  And it would be hypocritical to believe in good fate, but not bad fate ( Read more... )

If you don't mind me commenting about it, I wanted to say that I can agree with that, to a degree. I mean, obviously I believe in God. Though I don't believe in fate, that is, I don't believe that our lives are written out for us by God, though I do believe that if we choose to follow Him, He has a plan for our lives ( ... )

I agree that rape is wrong. Rape is always wrong. But I'm saying that that is an abstract thing, entirely manmade. If an animal breeds with an unwilling mate, is it wrong? No. Because it has no word for wrong, and no capacity for understanding wrongness. We as humans have that, be it by evolution/design or the product of upbringing. Personally, I don't think it's DNA, because when you think about it, the hypothetical Mogli from Jungle Book is really no different than the animals he learned to be.

In a wierd way, sometimes I like to just sit back and think that, that the universe operates independant of morality. Somehow that thought makes things much easier to deal with.

jack, what makes you think that fate, god, and the concept of right and wrong are in any way related?

How are they not? God is the concept of a power controlling and creating fate. And to say that there is fate is to automatically say that to follow that fate is what we're supposed to do. It would be wrong to defy it, and right to accept it, because being fate, it is automatically right. And to apply wrong-right criteria to something so huge and impersonal just doesn't make sense to me. Too many senseless things happen in this world for there really to be a meaningful force behind it.

Like I said in my post I don't link God persay with fate because to me fate is something you have no choice about. I believe God gives me a choice to accept His plan for my life or not. Though as you said about fate, I consider His plan for me right, and turning away from that wrong.
I could see how you would see them as the same thing however. I guess I just see a lot of fine lines between everything.
As for the last statement, it's kind of p and q isn't it? I mean p insinuates q. But then I could counter it with "Well too many "coincidental" things happen for there not to be something behind this world."
*shrugs*
Sorry for nitpicking. I'm bored and skipping class, lol.

Yeah, but in the same way, q doesn't insinuate p. To say fate is automatically, indirectly saying God. But like you said, believing in God doesn't neccesarily mean believing in fate. I don't know where this thought came from, but now I seem to be getting really into it. I might end up writing an essay on this, just to express it properly. Hell, it would probably be a good thing to have socked away for future college or something.
