I think Symantic and Norton are the same thing. I have found Norton annoying on J's computer, especially if you travel and are trying to use internet at another location. I've had McAfee for years and never had a problem with it.
Recently I decided to try AVG. I've heard lots of good things. I thought it was causing issues with Outlook so I uninstalled it and went with Avast (another free and highly regarded anti-virus). The only downside of AVG is that if you use Outlook you have to change the settings so it doesn't put a silly attachment on each email letting you know it was scanned and clean.
Of course, with the free you don't the firewall and some of the other perks from McAfee.
Since J can get McAfee for free as a government employee, I think I'm going to put it back on my computer. I'm used to it and know it's quirks. I don't think it used any more RAM than Avast or AVG.
I use Norton myself and the protection has been great. LTG is right that it can be a bit annoying though. We also had one isolated problem with it refusing to get updates about two years after we got it. It took some troubleshooting and reinstalling to get it to work right, but it has been fine ever since. I believe that problem was an error caused by Windows Vista being a PITA.
