I'm both horribly tempted and horribly frightened about the prospect of watching this show. On the one hand, obviously I am going to watch any CW teen soap about Mary, Queen of Scots. On the other hand, obviously, I am going to watch any CW teen soap about Mary, Queen of Scots positively clutching my entire pearl necklace of Tudor feminist histories.
(Also aside: I AM IMMEASURABLY ATWITTER with delight that you know who Phoenix, and indeed, what the Dream of the Red Chamber is. I just spent like an hour discussing how that was my foundational concept of a love story to somebody.)
Not only do I know what The Dream of the Red Chamber is, once, in the late 70s, I went to a movie version in New York's Chinatown with a friend and her mother. I think I was the only non-Chinese in the place. It was so crowded that the line outside went on for ages, and a gentleman not too far ahead said something that made my friend laugh and turn to me. "He said, 'Everybody's here! Even barbarians!'"
I wasn't sure how I'd react to Bao-Yu being played by a woman, but it turned out to be fine.
While of course, I am happy that you have found (one hopes) lucrative employment with a creatively satisfying television series, I was rather watching the season finale of House thinking: Finally! Finally! She'll have to write the next book after City of Diamond.
Non fen tightropegirl readers: don't break your heart tracking this book down. But if you can snag a copy of any of the Gate of Ivory series, do: you won't be disappointed.
