They really know how to let a fangirl down, don't they? Also, You're way smarter than them!

So, if there ever was The Rift, it happened quite slowly and is here.

I guess that would depend on how you define the rift. To me, it's not a point where they stop being friends, but rather the point where they flat out say, "You *are* my enemy and I will do whatever it takes to stop you from whatever it is you're doing/do whatever it takes to destroy you whether it had to do directly with me or not." Because at some point, that's the attitude that Superman and Lex have toward each other and that goes beyond a simple, "You're not who I thought you were so I can't be your friend." So by that way of thinking, it doesn't appear the rift has arrived--I haven't watched much at all this season, so maybe they are at that point, but from what everyone else has been saying it's not.

So it's very possible that Lana could be the ultimate cause of the rift--the thing that pushes them from just not-friends to sworn enemies.

That was my thinking, as well. There's a difference, to me, between the rift we have now between the boys, and The Rift of the future, when they go past not being friends to actively hating each other. I wouldn't mind if Lana had been a cause of *a* rift, but I really don't think they can make it believable that she's the cause of *The* Rift. If that makes sense.

The thing is, they can never ever portray that kind of rift in SV. Because that rift (especially from Lex's side) is between Lex and Superman, not Lex and Clark. Because for Lex Superman is "The Enemy", not Clark Kent.

Since Smallville will not cover the actual active Superman years, they can never portray that part of the rift.

Word. The minute (in Craving ya'll) when Lex started digging was the signal that Lex was more curious in the hows and what's and whys to ever really be Clark's friend. (Sure they were friendly, they did friendish stuff but there has always been the Lex pushing Clark, Clark shying away and then in S3 and S4, Clark pushing back (which has labeled him and the rest of the Kents 'asses' by many in fandom) that you'd never see in any other friendship on this show. Not without a lot more angst, a lot more exploration, and a lot more reassurence.)

...I think I might have to go meta on this. *toddles off*

I hated to see the subtetly torn away

Subtlety? In Smallville? Subtlety has never lived anywhere near Smallville.

Anyway, I agree with you on most points, and also with regard to these spoilers possibly being not all that accurate. This is Almiles we're talking about.

They probably get cheap thrills watching all the fanwanking and crying over the Clex.

And also, for the record, you're a h0r. (Had to get it in there somewhere.)

I hate to bring in comic's-canon, but one act of villainy in the comics that further establishes the rift between Superman and Lex has to do with Lana. In one arc, as far as I remember, Lex physically tortures Lana to (I think) find out the identity of Superman. I can never tell where AlMiles are going to take the show, but I can see how there is something tense happening between the three of them (Lex, Lana, Clark) that's going to boil over next season...
