I have grand plans of one day being a "real" cook but at this point in my life I'm quite happy to just have a stocked pantry full of basic canned goods that I can dump together and make a tasty meal

Cooking from super-scratch is something I've never been gifted with, and I never learned from my mom either. Dina can do it really well and when we were both in El Paso, she cooked amazing meals for us. Although she did love my mushroom pork chops, the rest of my cooking efforts were, uh, less inventive. Canned soup, boxed mac & cheese, sandwiches etc.

I am clueless with spices and I think it's because I don't have a sense of smell and therefore I don't have a finely tuned ability to taste herbs and spices. I can taste *food*, but I can't pinpoint spices and herbs, so I don't use them much unless I *know* they will be good, such as garlic in pasta sauce.
