First, I would like to say that this was supposed to be 2,000 words of Damon/Elena not!fic, where Damon kept appearing back in Elena's life, their relationship gradually building from there. This is not that story--although it remains totally self-indulgent in its quest for happy endings, and should probably be considered an AU just because of that

Whenever the urge to write random things strikes you, I highly suggest you give in to to!
I can see how you might think this is OOC - this version of Elena and Damon are very far away from the Elena and Damon that we were introduced to. But you're NOT portraying the Elena and Damon that we were introduced to. You're portraying the Elena and Damon of two, three, four and five years into the future. TVD S1 takes place over... what, six months maybe? (I'm a little behind on the eps, so I don't know if they mention any dates) Elena and Damon have grown so much over the course of the first season alone, that they are both already quite a distance away from the characters we were first introduced to in the actual canon . You show Damon and Elena's personal and romantic evolution in such a way that it comes across as natural and organic. This may not be their future - but the way you write it? It could be
