Survey regarding Buffy and Musicals

Oct 05, 2008 18:54

Hi all

I'm doing some research on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, particularly on the episode "Once More, With Feeling" (the musical episode). In particular, I'm looking for information on how the episode was received, and how it affected people, particularly if they are/were fans of musical theatre before or after seeing the episode. I've created the ( Read more... )

1. I'm somewhat of a fan. I kinda burned out on them in high school. And I run screaming from Rogers and Hammerstein. I've played practically every song from every musical of theirs in my 20 years of playing in bands and orchestras. It's the bane of all Summer orchestras and community bands ( ... )

Thanks for your answers.
"I really enjoyed that he incorporated music into it all by having it be a demon that causes the entire thing."
Could you elaborate on this more? Do you like that he used a Demon for that purpose, or would it have been the same if he used some other way of incorporating music into it? I guess I'm not sure what you mean...

"There are many musicals that I like and enjoy, but I also think it is hard to make a good musical, so I am often disappointed in many of them."
Could you elaborate on this? When you said it is hard to make a good musical, I expected you to say you're usually impressed. What do you consider a "good" musical?

"If the plot is poor (or preachy)..."
Those are very different things. There are movies that get preachy too, and I don't always like those.

So what do you think of the recent "Jukebox" musicals, like Mamma Mia and Movin' Out? Do you feel the songs progress the plot enough, even though they started as collections of songs?

Interesting that you watched Buffy after Firefly. I suspect that's unusual (but I don't really know).

Strange question, since I don't really know you. Do you consider yourself a "geek"? (I'll be asking more people that too...) Btw, how did you come across my survey?

1. I'm not generally a fan, I don't seek them out. But usually when I see them I enjoy them.

2. I prefer sci-fi or big budget action movies just because I like to be taken away from my daily life once in a while. Good musicals can do that too.

3. I was very into theater through high school. A bad college experience put an end to that. But I did enjoy being in Pirates of Penzance very much. I was in the church choir for many years, but don't really sing so much now (except when ancientsong trains me for caroling ( ... )

"a good musical for me not only effectively presents another place and time, but puts me in the minds of the characters of that setting."
I suppose the same can be said (for you) of movies? So in a sense it wouldn't matter if there's music or not, as long as it is realistic enough to transport you to the time, place, and situation of the show... yes?

"When my wife made a point of educating me about musicals, I came to appreciate all of them a lot more, even the ones I don't care for."
Really? How so? Like which ones?

"Before OMWF I don't know that I analyzed musicals as much as I watched them."
Is that more because of OMWF, or more because of me? :)

Interesting that your mom doesn't like musicals, yet some of her favorite movies are musicals. Do you know why that is? Which movies are you talking about (other than Willy Wonka, I assume), and why might they be (or not be) considered musicals?

Yeah, these tv musicals in particular are always too short. That's my problem with Dr. Horrible too. Have you seen that? What do you think of that?

Another (perhaps odd) question... Do you consider yourself a geek? :)
