Silly hat day, anyone?

Taking over SHD duties from the girl who weren't a mod that abdicated (who showed us Neal getting the rock love, so she's awesome).

Topic?  Gale magic!  Does DG's magic only work in the Zone, ya think?  What about Azkadellia, and all the little tricks she pulled (like shrinking Ahamo *snort*) ... do you think her magic is amplified because of the ( Read more... )

I like to think that the magic only works in the Zone, except that travel storms seem to be able to be called up on the Other Side (otherwise, how'd Lonot and his crew get back!).

I also think that the Sorceress had her own power, and that's what amplified Az's magic while she was possessed, but now she's just normal Gale magic.

It's the look on his face when he's hit with the rock. OH YEAH. Peaceful, kind of. He's strangely good at that. \=

I think the Zone may be a more "magic-friendly" location, but I'm not sure it's the only location where magic works.

The possibility of magical travel between worlds implies that magic can (and does) affect both sides. By extension, I don't think it's unreasonable to think that it's possible for DG or Azkadellia to be able to have some magical effect in another world.

Now, said world might not be as hospitible to magic as the Zone, of course. Kind of like how Arizona isn't exactly hospitible to rainy weather, but it does happen from time to time under the right conditions.

Arizona! Yes, that is a good thought.

Hm... it does beg the question though, of what conditions make a location hospitible to magical influence. Is it the magic user individually?

Is it related to physical location similar to the Force in Star Wars (the Dark Side Cave on Dagobah, for instance)?

Or maybe magic flows in currents, like weather currents that make some places rainy and others arid?

...may I note that thanks to your influence I have an undercurrent of personal canon in which the Zone is MADE OF MAGIC?

Well done, you!

LOL... *plots some more* PERSONAL CANON WILL OWN YOUR SOUL.

Wait, where'd that come from? Al? Eli? OMG WIND?! In Wind verse, there's this
theory factoid that no one but a magical being can sit on the throne, otherwise all the magic becomes withered, gets corrupted, or throws everything out of balance.

You keep that balance in check. It spins in you, light and dark, light and dark. You’re like a sieve, a strainer. The magic of the realms goes through you-and everything in the world touched by magic-which is pretty much everything in the world-stays in spiritual balance. There is only as much good in the world as there is evil. And only as much light in magic as there is dark.’

‘But we create the dark magic.’

‘Everything has a shadow.’ He lifted a hand, and her cheeks fell into shadow. He let it fall, and the dappling of sunlight through tiny leaves came again. ‘Everything has a shadow, but only the light has the power to move the shadow. You see?’It pwns me hardcore ( ... )

Wow. Now I have much shame. But that's okay, I'm officially striving to be more like you.

My vote is that there's something about the Outer Zone.

Maybe it's the second sun, or the odd reverse-ness of the place Yes, I stand by East is west.

Granted, I've never thought about magic on the Other Side... assuming DG knew she had the magic, that is. I don't believe Az has any physical powers in Kansas.

I have a feeling that the magic of the Zone is simple - making plants grow, warding off wicked witches, etc. Whether Az drew from the Witch's powers, or the Witch drew from hers... something was goin' down there...

Now that I think about it, Az probably didn't know much past the few "parlor tricks" and the Witch tapped in - maybe she wasn't the only thing bound in the cave [kid in a candy store, etc]

Now, I'm going to think about it all day....

Oh: ROCK!!

You'd think that I would not use a silly hat day topic to gather opinions and fanon from everyone else, to help me figure out a plot...

But you'd be wrong.

Yes, I stand by East is west.

Okay, not so much now as before... but the topics are wearing thin...

Next thing you know, we'll be discussing undergarments.

Oh, wait...

Yes! I love the idea that it's the retrograde planet that causes the magic...

EAST WEST!
