a turning point

I got called "ma'am" today.  TWICE.  The first time by a man in his mid 30s.  The second time by a tall, dark and hot undergrad student worker.  I don't know which incident was worse.  Like, I guess I can accept that I no longer look like a college student.  But to have an old dude see me as an old lady?  I am 26 years old, goddammit.  I still have ( Read more... )

That's a mature reaction to have. Maybe this knowledge that people see me as a ma'am will inspire me to feel more confident in my authority. Yeah, that's right! I am someone to be taken seriously!

Oh, don't even worry about it. I know what you mean, because I think it every time someone calls me ma'am too, but I use ma'am 100% of the time, because I don't know where to draw the line between miss and ma'am. Those two could have been military, they call everyone sir or ma'am, or they could just work in a customer service oriented atmosphere like I do, where saying ma'am was not something they conciously thought about.

In any case, thanks! I think I'm going to say ma'am even more now, just to try and make young women question their god and their existence. mwahaha.

I've been ma'amed while being carded. I really don't think it indicates belief that you are in fact matronly, just a sign of respect. Really really. I actually assumed all the comments would be telling you this because when I read the entry I thought "pshaw, that means nothing! That's just a sitcom joke"

I've noticed people from the South do it a lot more. And military people.

I dunno, I don't need no more respect. And I think most women would be more flattered to be called "miss" than to be called "ma'am." Unless they were an old lady or dressed in a power suit.

I think I was just extra offended in these cases because it was two dudes, one of whom I would not have minded boning. [Can girls say that? No, according to urban dictionary I should say, "would not have minded having bone me"]. I guess I was more annoyed by that instance after all. Being called "ma'am" by that dude made me feel inappropriate, like a secondary school teacher who should go to prison.
