panisdead asked me some questions as part of a meme. Meme instructions: comment with "surf's up!" and I'll give you five questions of your own to answer, at least for two or three people.
1). Which of the totally unrealistic things you pictured yourself doing when you were a kid do you secretly wish you'd stuck with? Do you ever think about doing it now?
I wanted to be a marine biologist, but my dad convinced me that it would be a bad career choice, since only one is hired per year in the world (according to him). I would have made a lousy biologist anyway, since I'm averse to bisecting anything. Another problem: I took scuba diving when I was in college and found myself a bit claustrophobic underwater. All that said, I'm still drawn to the sea and enjoy reading about it and watching various undersea specials. David Doubilet is one of my favorite marine photographers. Probably a little late to pick up this career now, but I could see myself volunteering at an aquarium one day.
2). If you could pick a character in one of your fandoms (substitute books, movies, or tv shows as needed) to transplant into your life (or transplant yourself into theirs), which would it be? Why?
I always wanted to be a member of the March family, in Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women." I thought it would be awesome to have a family of close-knit sisters to share my life with, and have even tried to recreate that kind of friend circle at various times in my life. I specifically wanted Jo to be my BFF, because she didn't let anyone bully her and seemed like a lot of fun--creative, smart, well-read.
3). You have a year free of responsibility. What do you do differently? What typical tasks do you still do?
I find my hermit cabin in the mountains and live in nature for a year. I'll go for walks, watch plants grow and animals forage, paint and journal. I'll nap in my hammock and read books.
4). You are moving to a new planet and the spaceship has a strict weight limit. What personal belongings do you pack in your
liquor-store-box-sized suitcase?
My iPhone, (as long as the new planet has WiFi) loaded with books, music, games, etc. I'm concerned that I wouldn't be able to bring enough paper to support my painting habit, but if the new planet has paper, then I'm bringing my brushes and paints. My camera! I'd need a laptop too, which I don't currently own. Sadly my cello and piano will not fit. I suppose I need at least one change of clothing. Binoculars for scoping out the new wildlife. Not sure what else. Chocolate???
5). Describe your favorite meal.
Saag paneer, naan, vegetable samosas, vegetable pakora, gulab jamin (sp?), all washed down with a mango lassi. Now I'm hungry...
