Nah, I don't think it has to do with latent guilt regarding Iraq, per se.

I just think it's our country reassuring ourselves that we are good people period. We do this all the time.

What I don't understand is the motive for even giving a dollar for the relief effort. Bush has made so many strides in alienating the U.S. from most of the rest of the world, why try to be a humanitarian now?

i choose to believe people, at least a large portion of people, are sincere in their want to help for the sake of helping.
but then, is the motive really so important? i think, ultimately, all that matters is that aid is being given.

that's very nice, but the fact that this was turned into a news story supports my idea. what purpose does that story serve other than to make americans feel better about themselves?
