I'm a complete softie, so this NYT article on an illegal immigrant made me tear up slightly by the time it was over. It's a total human interest piece, but I enjoyed it nonetheless, so I'm sharing.

Harold Fernandez was different from most freshmen... )

I was expecting Harold to have gotten deported unceremoniously, because of all I've been reading lately about immigration processes over there lately. I'm kind of tearing, too.

Well, if you look at the timeline on this story, this would have happened around 1985 -- and the political climate in the US was very, very different 25 years ago. I suspect today he would have been deported. They've done it to other students (e.g. the boys from Miami-Dade). Saddening but the people in the comments show how and why this happens.

I know, right? I reread it when you commented, and it really is lovely. What a powerful story. (And if only the country was still that way.)

I was recently thinking about you, which is why I looked up your LJ. Specifically I remembered what you said about your self-esteem, that it was so robust and healthy that it could withstand a punch in the face every once in a while! Haha, I can't remember exactly what brought it to mind though : )

What's your twitter handle? I kinda remember following you but can't remember what it was. I know its not @tinymich though!

Aw, ha! I remember writing that too -- I think the phrase is something like take your self-esteem out for a good throatpunch (that's my friend Matt's phrase) -- and I think it's in the context of the Mermaid photos where I look really stupid! Now I have to go find it.
Aha. here it is. http://tinymich.livejournal.com/237180.html

I'm mich_lim on twitter, where a lot of the other LJers are too! I didn't know you were there :)
