I've been given lots of lovely wool for knitting with. Following Nicola's fine example I think I will take the plunge into Fair Isle with it, for it is in lots of super colours. It didn't come with labels but I think it's probably entirely or mostly actual wool. It feels a bit tough and scratchy and thus I'm worried that the gloves I make with it ( Read more... )

Knit a tension square then hand wash it gently at a lukewarm temp (I usually use baby shampoo rather than posh stuff!) and add a bit of hair conditioner to the last but one rinse. Leave it to soak for a bit and then rinse it again. this does tend to make things softer than fabric conditioner

If it is mostly actual wool it should still have lanolin in it which softens it naturally, and it should feel softer with working it. I've never tried hair conditioner but tension square and washing first sounds good idea. Look forward to seeing it.
