I hadn't realised how undemocratic our electoral system really is. I heard a thing on the radio the other day where someone was explaining that because of the huge variation in the size of constituencies, Labour have to win many fewer votes to win a seat than other parties do. Where have politicians got the idea from that organisations are built of "front line services" which can function at top quality independently of any cuts made to the "non-front-line" aspects of the organisations work. Does anyone actually think that there are any organisations left who employ people just for the hell of it without a proven need ( Read more... )

Hurrah for beer! We missed last year's beer festival, and this year also managed to miss the ticket-release weekend such that they were sold out of saturday lunchtime tickets by the time we got ourselves organised. Surely I shouldn't be this tired. All I've done all day was go swimming with R&T&R, then go to Ikea with same for combined lunch-and-shopping outing, quick pop into Boots then to the Tobacco Factory for afternoon tea with H&A&N before returning home for supper and bed time. *good* weekend. S, M & J came over for Sunday Lunch and I cooked truffled mushroom & emmental parcels, roast potatoes & roast Mediterranean veg, steamed carrots & mangetout, and for pudding a glorious mess of marscarpone, chocolate, brandy and amaretti biscuits. Saw A Single Man and was very impressed - go see it. Colin Firth gives an excellent performance. The film is beautifully shot, at times whimsical, frustrating, amusing, terribly sad and always very believable. A very worthwhile way to spend 100 minutes if you have them to spare.
