1) "Smugness" can be equated to "hubris" in many of these eps, and hubris is of course traditionally followed by a major fall.
2) I indulged in vast rantiness on the overused plot theme of A) female character gets powered-up and B) goes bonkers, in the Whedonverse and elsewhere. (With further discussion in the comments to the crosspost.) So it's a real knee-jerk topic with me, but I prefer to just link to what I've already said in the hopes of finding something new to kick around rather than repeating myself

One day I'm going to hit the right critical mass of annoyance, broodings on the topic and free time to post a lengthy meta rant on the cultural concept of "romance" -- as reflected and reinforced by popular media -- and how it handicaps real-life relationships by the myths people have been brainwashed into believing. And then when the topic comes up I can just link to the rant and spare myself the repetition

i will be rather sad if doctor who turns to the "picard's latest girlfriend dies *again*" school of romance. and to think i thought TNG was good until DS9 came along. . .
to turn your rant on its head a little bit, i think the media bombards us with that stuff because it knows we are wired to be interested in it. of course, if that's true, the *last* thing we need is more indoctrination, which would just make it harder for us to make a rational decision.* it's hard enough as it is. on the baby front, not as hard for me, for whatever reason (maybe because i'm a guy, maybe because i'm me)--but at least *some* women appear to suddenly get struck by the B message despite having appeared to be immune to it previously. that's not to say that the B message being spread through the media doesn't enforce that, of course.
*countering that, though, a former advisor of mine (female, childless), once said to me: "having a child is never a rational decision." and i have had a hard time thinking of a good argument to the contrary!
