the beginning
i recently watched rose and the end of the world again.
1. some things interpreted as "problems that will get fixed" in some corners of fandom at the time (e.g., jokiness/silliness, see: burping trashcan) were obviously never fixed. i was ambivalent about whether this stuff was problematic at the time. now, i can honestly say that it doesn't seem ( Read more... ) -
total war in season three of doctor who, revisited
quite a while back, i speculated (with spoilers) about the theme of total war in the third season of newdoctorwho.
the themes didn't play out quite the way i expected, so i thought i might revisit them.

in praise of the first half of utopia
i'm about tired of seeing people complain about the beginning of utopia. (spoilers for the ep. here.)
the basic complaints seem to be that it's a boring quarry, a familiar sci-fi set-up, too planet zog, etc. the first problem with this is that anyone who's watched the latter half of series 1, or torchwood, is only paying attention to all of that a ( Read more... ) -
doctor who and the waste land
over on doctor who, the dramatic argument is being made that the only moral way to respond to a total war is by becoming ambivalent about your own survival at the cost of others.

wacked-out dr. who theory: chaplin and the doctor
a local university held a chaplin film festival, and i went to all the showings. now my head rattles around with chaplin/doctor who relatedness:
1. englishness. duh.
2. (doctor) two as "cosmic hobo." people throw chaplinesque at him. possibly they are mostly thinking about the costume or the comedy running. but there's more than that. the tramp ( Read more... ) -

i just remembered that back when i had, you know, free time, i wrote a proposal for a doctor who novel. it was bonkers and kind of crap. i only wrote the synopsis and the one chapter, but you can get the drift. ETA: i removed the chapter because i'm gonna cannabalize it for parts, so you can't have it no more.
