Louise and I cloth-diapered for about a month off of happy little "lets be all traditional/eco-friendly" ideas.
Our water and power bills went through the roof because the amount of laundry we were doing doubled. With today's energy prices and the availability of several kinds of earth-happy diapers I would really recommend against it.
To be perfectly honest, I'm more concerned about saving money in the long run. The environment is cetainly a concern of mine, and I DO want to help ease my footprint, but it's a (close) second concern to overall affordability.
Thanks for your input. I'll definitely keep it in mind.
I don't have kids yet but I do teach daycare during weekends. What I have to say is it would be a big hassle to your muppet's teacher if you switched to cloth diapers. :s
That's why I've been looking at the All-In-Ones. There would be no folding, no pinning and the waterproof layer is built in to the diaper. They would only have to change it (similar to a disposable but with either velcro or plastic snaps) and place the soiled diaper into a waterproof bag so I could handle the mess later. In fact, some have additional disposable liners that can be thrown away (like a pantiliner for poo).
You are far more helpful that you could believe. I would rather hear people I trust and admire say "You know what, don't" instead of trying to support my insanity when you know it's a pain in the ass.
The daycare will if there isn't more labor required than with disposables, and with today's new all in ones, it's easy for caregivers. As much as I would prefer not to, I probably would spring for the disposable liners, especially once he starts on solids.
*shudders*
As I mentioned, for me this would be about long-term savings more than the environment.
I know nothing about cloth diapers, I am not that adventurous and am waaaay too lazy to deal with them. However, more power to you for wanting to do them.
However, one of my friends is really into them for her newest baby, and I know she makes the covers and is into a lot of LJ groups and such, I think. Sarah, or yellowitchgrl is the one I know who uses them. I will send her an email to let you know you're really interested; I'm sure she'll be happy to answer any questions you might have and turn you into the various resources she knows about.
