As I understand, the Hasidim got going in 17th century russia; I'm unaware of a sect of that name running around either in the Hasmonean or the Roman era. Is there a different sect of that name that's more obscure?

There are two different groups. I'm comparing/contrasting them because they share the same name.

feel free to call me. i probably won't have the answer, but i have friends who will, and will know what resources to go to. which group is it? labovicher? also, were they really chassids in the roman era? chassidism as a movement didn't start until the 17th century, i thought.
