My dad quit smoking when I was a baby; my mother smoked well into my toddlerhood, furtively, in our unfinished basement. My little brother used to climb down the stairs after her, newly imbued with the power of speech, screaming "Are you MOKING? Are you MOKING, mom?" Dad had gone to work on the little guy, informing him in no uncertain terms that "moking" was bad and that mom was misbehaving terribly by doing it. With that anguished little voice to haunt her every time she tried to light up, my mom claims, she finally had no trouble quitting for good.
