I remain mildly appalled by the number of doctors I've met through my dad who do smoke, though.

Med school will do that to you.

On smoking: I loved it. I loved it a lot for twenty years. I quit about two years ago. I still miss it, sometimes -- addiction is a gift that keeps on giving.

If you smoke, I can smell it on you from twenty feet away. I can smell it on you as I walk past you in the WalMart parking lot, as you come in the office to pay your rent, as you sit in your car beside me at a stoplight. There is no way I will ever not-notice the siren of cigarette smoke.

Whumpdotcom: I didn't do Nicorette because they wanted a fortune for the stuff... but don't ask me how many packs of Arctic Chill Dentyne Ice I went through. I should have bought stock.

Marijuana can be an okay occasional/recreational drug, but it's a loser habit. I except people for whom it's a form of self-medication, and who can be identified by their normal levels of responsibility and achievement.

Ever notice that we're collectively scared to talk about the reasons why people take drugs? We label some drugs good, and don't discuss them, and label other drugs bad, and don't discuss them either. This is dumb. "Drug use" isn't a single thing. Some people take speed to get through an exhausting and unrewarding work week. Others take it so they can function at the same level as everyone else. Others just like the way it feels. Some people drop acid in order to recreationally examine thought and perception, while others just use it to make music and dancing more fun. People do opiates because it makes the world hurt less. Cigarettes have very complex behavioral/neurochemical uses ( ... )

I'm reminded of all those 1950s/1960s sitcoms where the guy gets home from a hard day at the office, lights a cigarette and pours himself and his wife a stiff martini. Wonder how different it would have been if they'd just rolled a joint?
