Some corners of my culture happen to take religion literally.

[ Gaius is using video, and sitting in his cabin. The lights are currently playing up, as they're wont to do, reflecting off all the glass and chrome of his replicated expensive apartment. He has a cigarette, a cup of tea, and little better to do but seek some conversation to defeat ( Read more... )

People talk religion too much. They talk religion when they don't know what to think.

Chilling, then, to think it's what the mass majority of people in my worlds buy into. I suppose it's not different where you come from?

Not so different at all. Especially towards the end.

But me...I don't buy into it. We are only stardust. That's as philosophical and "religious" as I get.

...a bit dour, but it holds water. Comparatively speaking.

I just never thought about it much.

Time Lords believe in science and tradition. There are some few eccentrics who worship Eternals almost as deities, but they're a very small minority.

'Time Lords' sort've sound like their own higher power, to be honest.

To some races we have been in the past. [Narvin is not sure whether to be proud or ashamed of this.]

Well, well done, you.

How are things called Eternals not deities? I say this for intellectual discourse, naturally.

I'm amazed no one's tried to throw anything yet. Religion can get awfully... sticky, where I'm from. I suppose it comes from having so many gods.

That's why I'm on a phone, in my room, with the door locked.

We've a few too many as well. There ought to be a culling.

[She decides not to ask what a phone is. The technology in this place, it's all a little much.]

Probably a safe bet... The first part, not the second. I'd be careful who you say that around, sir. Some people might be inclined to take you all too seriously.

Oh, come off it. If anything, this place should be offensive enough to their precious belief system. Some outer space computer programmer won't make a lick of difference for mouthing off.

[ Spoken amiably enough. ]

[ Squint at text, but-- Gaius has talked to enough people so far not to get very hopeful about that. He lets the video feed continue, taking a moment to tap ash off cigarette. ]

The very same. I didn't expect people to grasp the reference.

Capric--

Close, but no cigar. Caprica, though that's an old name for it. And if I'm not, then they haven't said anything to me.

Standard earth beliefs, nothing special. Somewhat shaken by the barge, which was rather inevitable.

Well, I don't doubt 'nothing special', but Earth isn't very standard. For me.

Why shaken? Ghosts don't enter into the system?

A magic barge in space doesn't enter the system. Ghosts are just the most recent addition.

They'd have to be a very specific, obscure minority for that to be the case, yes.

About the same kind of questionable, if you ask me.
