sado island? seishun for 6 hours or so to joetsu, and then 2.5 on a ferry. beaches and stuff. rent a bike. noh theatre in a shrine courtyard by night.

i'm sorry to hear about your screen and ipod... i don't think it is strange to use an external monitor- but i wonder if it would be strange to use the laptop keyboard and an external monitor?

is shimane too far from tokyo (14hr train ride)? there are lots of festivals and things on there this time of year... it's a combination of mountains and beaches and not crowded.
